As you might guess, those steps begin with you. This is truer than you realize, so I urge you to read on to learn more.

 
Take a deep and honest look at yourself.

 
Where in your heart do you harbor anger, resentment, hostility, aggression, even hatred? Perhaps you have been wronged, maybe even seriously so. Then there are the hurts, large and small, as well as the disappointments you have suffered.

 
Pretending they are not there simply feeds them. 

When we don’t look at our negative emotions, they can grow larger and out of proportion. They take on a life of their own and begin affecting your life in negative ways.

 
Shine the light of your attention on them. Look at these difficult memories and situations.

 
Here’s the key- suspend your judgment of them.

 
If you can’t do this right away, do it in incremental pieces. Pretend you are an objective investigator studying the situation from afar.

 
This does not mean you deny the emotions you have.

Your emotions are valuable and vital signals telling you what is wrong and giving clues about what needs to change. Sometimes the changes you need to make are in your thoughts and attitudes about a situation. Sometimes your emotions signal a call to action to change your environment.

 
So, value your difficult emotions like a wise old friend. Tease out the truth and distortions in your feelings.

 
This leads naturally to looking at your emotions and the situation with empathy and compassion.

 
Cultivate this. How? Ask yourself questions. Why did you feel this way? What led up to this situation? Could you really have felt any differently? Probably not, but if you could have felt differently, why didn’t you? How did your feelings progress, especially in connection with the situation as it developed?

 
Be gentle, not harsh. Listen to yourself. What messages were your emotions giving you?

 
If you do this exercise a few times or more over time, you will find more information and understanding emerging. You will begin to feel a loosening and opening. In that opening, peace will begin to take root and grow.

 
Next, when you feel ready and more peace within yourself, do this exercise focused on others.

 
Try easy people first, i.e., people you love and like and feel good about. Then try people you struggle with, people you have problems with.

At the end of each time you do the exercise, send yourself and the other person peace in your thoughts, heart and as you breathe out.

 
As you practice this, you will find new understandings and new ways of being with people. You will be practicing peace in your own life.

 
Finally, do this exercise with group and world problems that disturb you.

 
You will find you think differently about them. You may be led to some new and unusual actions to take in regards to them. I will leave that mystery up to you to discover.

What reiki hand positions are the best for giving reiki? Are reiki hand positions really important in giving a reiki treatment?

 
Traditionally, a reiki treatment of natural healing energy often involves using reiki hand positions on or above specific areas of the body. Unless the client cannot tolerate it or does not want it, the formal, full body reiki treatment is a “can’t go wrong” choice. It is usually not necessary for an effective reiki healing. And there are many situations where a full body treatment is not practical, possible or desired.

 
While the traditional, full body reiki treatment has hand positions too numerous to describe in this article, there are some hand positions and key information about hand positions you should know.  You may also be surprised to learn when reiki hand positions are not necessary.

 
The most important areas of the body to place your hands on – or above – correspond to the energy centers or chakras of the body. Since antiquity, various cultures have described areas of the body as being energy centers for our life force. The cultures are remarkably similar in their descriptions of these energy centers.

What are the energy centers?

  
The main energy centers are usually in a vertical line through the center of the body, i.e., in line with the spine. They are the:

• bottom of the groin/tailbone
• lower abdomen below the naval 
• solar plexus (just at the base of the ribcage)
• heart
• throat
• forehead
• crown of the head.

 
Reiki is especially powerful and effective when given from the palm of the hand to these energy centers. Of course, different energy centers correspond to different health areas of the body, different emotional states and different spiritual issues.

 
Remember that reiki is a gentle healing energy and not harmful. It is always good to know that reiki goes where it is needed in the body regardless of where you place your hands.

 
So, just how important are reiki hand positions?

 
Reiki hand positions are very important to the new reiki practitioner. The reiki channels in the new practitioner are still being formed and ‘widened’. The new practitioner is still becoming accustomed to reiki and how it feels. The hand positions are an excellent guide for the practitioner to follow. They provide the place and the time duration for the reiki healing.

 
As the reiki healer gains experience, she or he may begin to gain an intuitive sense for the reiki hand position for any given client. She may feel guided to use her hands in a particular place. She may also receive intuitive information about the client and how the healing session should unfold.

When are reiki hand positions not needed? 

As experience deepens further, the healer may not need hand positions at all and may use them when he feels they would be of use or when reiki itself guides him to use them. The experienced reiki Level 2 healer and reiki master- in addition to reiki hand positions- may use distant reiki; mental, emotional and spiritual reiki; imagery and thought; intention and other means to give reiki in a healing energy session.

In order for the power symbol to work (i.e., become activated), you must be attuned to it. Reiki attunements are done by a reiki master, either in person or distantly, such as over the internet. You usually receive this reiki attunement in Reiki Level 2. It is a simple and beautiful process. You are shown how to draw and use it and are given its name.

Additional Level 2 reiki symbols

Other Reiki Level 2 symbols include the emotional or mental reiki symbol used for emotional and psychological aspects or issues. The reiki distant symbol is used in distance healing. This allows you to send reiki over any distance and time.

This is Part 1 of a series on secret reiki symbols revealed.

Secret for generations, reiki symbols have been revealed only in recent years.

Some people say they should still be kept secret as they are sacred and not to be trifled with.

I do not believe the reiki healing symbols should be a secret.

The secret is out anyway and the reiki symbols can be readily found. I think the more people are aware of these healing energy symbols, the more they are aware of reiki. And it is part of my mission to increase the use of reiki in this world and make it more accessible to people. 

Reiki is for everyone, not just a select few.

This is the symbol for reiki. The first symbol is Rei which means universal or divine. The second symbol  is Ki, meaning life force or energy. Together they mean the universal life energy or divine life force. This symbol is not used in healing. Other symbols, which we’ll discuss later, are used to transmit reiki healing.
 
While reiki symbols have their full power on their own, part of that power and effectiveness is activated with their repeated intentional use over years and centuries. So it is important to remember them as potent, positive healing symbols. They should be used to send, spread and represent the healing energy of reiki. That use can be in private healings or in public.

I like to see reiki symbols wherever that positive healing energy is needed.

Reiki symbols in public or unusual places can foster balance and harmony in that space. Reiki can mitigate negative influences. The reiki symbols encourage flourishing natural health, healthy relationships and peace. Reiki encourages intuition, spiritual growth, compassion and loving relationships.

Reiki symbols should not be ridiculed or used for negative purposes.

Difficulties and negative consequences can result from doing this. And reiki should not be forced on anyone. It should be offered or simply allowed to be present.

 
Reiki is a wondrous gift of sacred energy. In this time, we are blessed that so many millions of people now can access its natural healing effects. And so we offer thanks and appreciation for reiki.

Do you need to be attuned to use the reiki symbols?

The short answer is yes, you do.
Reiki attunements are conducted by a reiki master. The reiki attunements are a series of openings. As blood needs arteries and veins to travel around your body nourishing you, the natural healing energy of reiki needs a channel to flow through you.

We are not reiki and we do not control it.

We are simply a channel through which the natural healing of reiki flows to where it needs to go. This is unlike many other energy healing methodswhere you use your own will, energy and spirit in conjunction with healing energy. We as reiki healers prepare ourselves as channels for that energy and have the intent for the healing energy to flow through us.

So, you will not become depleted or tired from doing reiki. In fact, you will receive healing benefits, too, as reiki passes through you.

In the attunements, the reiki master opens the channel for reiki to flow through you.

This can be done in person or it can be done distantly without regard to space and time, such as over the internet.

 
You will be given the appropriate symbols for that attunement. The channels for those specific symbols and type of reiki energy are opened. Think of it like a tuning fork- you now resonate and sing with those particular notes that are those reiki symbols.

As reiki begins to flow through you, you may experience many feelings and effects.

You may be cleansed and experience healing of past issues. The energy itself is experienced differently by different people.

You need to know that is ok and give yourself time to adjust to the reiki healing energy flowing through you.

 
Occasionally, a person may spontaneously awaken to reiki and the reiki symbols without an attunement. This might happen in meditation, prayer, or in a deep crisis. This is a divine Grace gift and a remarkable blessing. That person might need some assistance in integrating their new abilities in their life and psyche.

• Position 1- Place one hand on each side of the jaw line, fingers towards the ears.
• Position 2- Place your right hand across your forehead and your left hand across the back of your head just above the base of the head.
• Position 3- Place one hand on either side of your throat, fingers around towards the back of the neck.
• Optional. Continue the reiki alternative healing treatment with hands on the heart and chest, your upper abdomen (third chakra), your lower abdomen (second chakra), and your groin (first chakra). End with reiki to the soles of the feet.

Notice increased relaxation and well being.

You may be feeling a lack of abundance and prosperity in your life. When you feel like you are not prosperous, you may be experiencing a blockage of your energy.

 
Abundance and prosperity are in the receiving channels of the energy of your body, mind and spirit. Sometimes those receiving channels can be blocked so that not enough energy flows into you and your life. Either the receiving channels never grew big enough to begin with or they have become blocked sometime in your life.

 
Your ability to receive abundance may never have become fully developed because you suffered physical, emotional or spiritual lack in childhood and never learned how to grow those channels. In fact, you may have developed a lot of negative thinking around your right to receive and how worthy or deserving you are.

 
In adulthood, loss, suffering or trauma may have blocked your ability to receive. Your energetic body was shocked into closing those channels down. Or, perhaps there was a gradual wearing down and closing of those channels after a long period of disappointments.

• Place your left hand on your solar plexus, palm down. The solar plexus is located between your ribs below the breasts.
• Place your right hand on your heart, palm down.
• Sign the reiki mental healing symbol with your left hand and say the name for it three times. Sign and say the reiki power symbol.
• Wait a few minutes resting quietly.
  Repeat the sign of the mental healing symbol and say it three times. Again do and voice the power symbol.
• Wait and rest a few moments.
• Again sign the mental healing symbol and say it three times. Make and say the reiki power symbol one time.
• Rest a few moments. Notice any sensations, thoughts or images that come to mind.
• Thank Reiki for opening your receiving channels and for the abundance and prosperity now flowing into your life.
